Muca Label x The Orchard 🍊

⸻
So, if you spend enough years writing songs, recording things at home, making videos, carrying instruments through airports, staring at waveforms and moving pixels around at 2 a.m., arguing about mixes, taking photos of each other for album covers in your kitchen, releasing a huge amount of music and never really stopping making things you believe in, eventually you end up here: Muca Label has signed with The Orchard. 🍊
And yes. We are VERY happy about it.

For those who have no idea who or what The Orchard is, let me explain.
In 2009, I signed as an artist with Sony Music, as some of you might remember. A few years later, Sony became the owner of The Orchard, one of the biggest music distribution and artist services companies in the world. And somewhere along the way, I developed this wild dream of one day having our own label working with a major distribution partner like them.
Also, their logo involves an orange.

Hence the oranges in our photos. 🍊
Muca started in Europe in 2017 and somehow followed us all the way to Nashville. The name is literally made from ours: Meg and Luca. Not exactly a multinational corporation. It’s the two of us, our music, cameras, computers, a huge number of instruments hanging on the wall, a lot of ideas and basically constant work, work, work…

Luca and I have actually tried several times over the years to get involved with The Orchard. And we got rejected. More than once. So no, this did not happen overnight. Building something takes years. Numbers are great, obviously, but I think you also have to build something that lasts, know what you stand for and keep doing the work even when nobody particularly cares. For us, that has always meant serving the music first and making something the way we believe it should sound and look, rather than trying to make it fit whatever might work well in the charts, on social media or at an award show.
And somehow, after all those years, here we are.
So what does distribution actually mean?
If you don’t work in music, distribution probably sounds pretty simple. You make a song. You upload it somewhere. Voilà , Spotify.

I wish.
Behind every release is a ridiculous amount of stuff nobody ever sees: audio, videos, artwork, lyrics, credits, ISRCs, rights, royalties and a lot of metadata. Over the years, Luca and I have released music through several different distributors and partners. Some experiences were great. Some were okay. And some were, let’s just say, educational.
As a result, our music ended up scattered across different systems, with different companies handling different releases, videos and platforms. Bringing all of that together is one of the biggest reasons why The Orchard matters so much to us.

Over the coming weeks and months, around 120 releases, including our music videos and a crazy amount of metadata, will be moving into their new home. But in reality, that means Google Sheets, uploading lyrics, fixing metadata, checking credits and checking files and versions.
The important part is that our music isn’t disappearing while all of this happens. You can keep listening and watching. We are transferring the existing releases so our streams, views and history can stay with them while the machinery behind them changes. And once everything is together, we can finally do a lot more with it.
And there is another piece of news that makes me particularly happy:
Red Wine Philosophy is back with me. 🍷
The album is now back in my own catalog under Muca Label and will be distributed through The Orchard. That one means a lot to me. I made the album, wrote it, produced it and lived with it for a very long time and worked on it until I felt burnt out, so having it back together with the rest of my music and being able to decide how it is handled from here feels really, really good. Especially because I am currently sitting in the studio finishing the next one.

So, I am disappearing into the studio to edit, produce, mix and master my new album. If you haven’t read the previous blog about that particular adventure, you can find it here. I still need at least another month. Meanwhile, Muca Label continues to be operated by its enormous international staff of… Meg and Luca. So if something occasionally takes a little longer, now you know why. We love doing this stuff ourselves…
Okay.
 Back to work.
Meg Pfeiffer (Meg is my full legal name. Megan exists only in other people’s imagination.) & Luca Stricagnoli

P.S. A few more things while I’m here…

Here is some pretty wonderful news: my song Call the Assassin from Red Wine Philosophy won a Best Rock Award at the InterContinental Music Awards.
Which is VERY cool.
And it makes me particularly happy because Call the Assassin was also signed by Crucial Music for sync opportunities. So… cross your fingers. Let’s see where that little song goes next.
And finally, I made a new playlist for the changing season.
Autumn and winter are coming, everything and everyone is getting calmer, the days are getting shorter, and I am so ready for all of it.
I LOVE IT!
